Carp at Sutton Bingham

Carp at Sutton Bingham

Carp on the fly day at Sutton Bingham reservoir

With a light southwest wind  blowing, the reservoir looked spot on for a bit of carp on the fly with lots of happy faces looking eager to get going, we did a quick meet and greet with Richard Lyon Wilson our ranger for the day and set off.

With top tips and advice given, most people headed for the water some stalking the shallows and others walking the banks. The rest choosing to go afloat and try their flyfishing skills by covering as much water as possible to find feeding fish.

It was a slow start for me which resulted in a few missed opportunities. Changing my flies regularly was very important to make sure I was finding the right food that the carp were feeding on or willing to have take on.

I finally managed a few small common carp and a lovely little mirror carp which came to a small yellow and pink slow sinking blob. Not that natural I know but with a light shower of rain it was making spotting carp difficult and the blob was a bit more visible.

I made my way back to the lodge for some dinner and a chance to catch up with everyone to see how things were going. Going back out I decided to change back to natural patterns and the humble blue flash damsel nymph took pride of place, taking a couple of nice common’s from amongst the tree roots.

A great day out with over 25 carp caught in total and a few nice Roach and Rudd in the mix. The icing on the cake was also a couple of new PBs for carp on the fly. Well done everyone.
